Using Felt Polishing Burs

Hi and thanks for getting some felt polishing burs from me.

I thought I should write up a quick user guide for them to give you an idea of how to use them to full effect. For a video demonstration feel free to check out any of my carving videos on the YouTube channel “Roys Rocks” (any polishing related videos will use these).

This kit comes with 10 pieces and are my favourite felt for polishing with metal oxides and diamond pastes after trying quite a few over the years.

I hope this very brief guide helps but if not, there are many videos on my channel using these exact burrs so check it out and ask me any questions you have.

Thanks and have fun carving,

Roy (YouTube: Roys Rock)

Stay Safe

I recommend at minimum safety glasses, lubricating with water and wearing a P2/N95 grade mask even when cutting wet. Vision and breathing are quite useful for us humans so look after your eyes and lungs. Also, for carving I always recommend using a flex shaft attachment on your rotary tool as water and electricity do not mix and you don’t want to give yourself a zap.

When Carving

I use these felts for the final polish (metal oxide/diamond pastes) and with the correct polishing compound you will get to a mirror polish as long as the pre-polish was correct.

Simply dip the bur in your metal oxide solution (soak it from dry to really pull in some compound) and lightly press it to the surface of your stone.
Use a slower speed especially on stones that are sensitive to heat as the friction can cause warming of the stone.

Maintenance

When you are done using them DO NOT store them back in the original box!

It is very important to avoid cross contamination of your polishing burs, so once used, dry and place it in a marked bag stating what it was used for and only use it for that polishing compound. This will also keep them clean from any potential contaminants that could affect your final polish.
