Roy mentioned on YouTube about using aluminum oxide for boulder opal. But the little bit I found online mentions it as a prepolish for most opal. Does this mean that cerium should be used after the aluminum to put a polish on the opal?

It can be a prepolish but it depends on the grade.
Same as diamond paste it can come in multiple grit sizes.
The version I sell is designed as a final polish so will achieve a final polish as well as the cerium oxide if not better on non opal material.
